Lazyday Cottages is located within an easy range of family activities in the Scottish Borders, Northumberland surrounding areas. Please see our activities guide below for more information.

Cycling

Located on the Tweed Cycle Way there are many elegant and gentle routes for cyclists around this area. For the more adventurous Glentress Mountain Biking centre offers some of the top Mountain Biking Trails in the UK.

Eating Out

The Allanton Inn at Allanton is close by plus our own local The Cross at Paxton. For great local value try The White Swan Hotel Duns or for something with live music The Wheatsheaf at Swinton. Taking a day out to the beach then visit The Royal Garden at Berwick upon Tweed.   For a unique experience surrounded by artefacts in a hidden valley then The Riverside Bakehouse in Abbey St Bathans is worth the effort. The Craw Inn at Auchencrow closer offers great food and a selection of traditional cask ales.

Events & Festivals

Major sporting events include Kelso Races and the Jim Clark Rally. Traditional events in summertime include the Border Ridings and Riding of the Boundaries around Berwick-upon-Tweed.   Crossing Borders runs annually an art trail including local artists to us here. Further up to Edinburgh international events such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival take place annually.

Fishing

Fish the River Tweed and experience the ultimate in salmon fishing, the River Tweed System is one of Europe’s premier fishing locations and Salmon fishing can be arranged by our helpful staff, please contact us for more details.  Alternative fishing includes trout fishing from Coldingham Loch and sea angling at Eyemouth, Burnmouth and St Abbs, all of these locations are great days out for the family.

Golf

The Scottish Borders is a golfers paradise. Roxburghe course near Kelso has an international reputation while closer to home the Hirsel Golf Club at Coldstream is a haven for the golfer on holiday and Eyemouth and Berwick Golf courses include coastal terrain for an exceptional scenic day out. Horse Riding

There are two riding schools located around LazyDay Cottages in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Berwick Riding Centre and Haggerston Castle Riding Centre. All options cater to all abilities and create amazing memories on horseback through the stunning Northumberland countryside.

Walking

Our favourite local walk is along the River Tweed from Horncliffe down to Paxton House..  The coastline boasts beautiful uncrowded beaches and footpaths.  Highlights include St Abbs Head, Coldingham Beach, Spital Beach, and the beautiful beaches of Holy Island.  Section of the following longer routes can be enjoyed including St Cuthberts Way leading through the historic country, the four Abbey Ways and the Southern Upland Way.

Wildlife

For wildlife lovers, we are ideally suited near places such as Paxton House known for its Red Squirrels and The River Tweed ideal for days out bird watching with a chance to see Otters and Kingfishers. You can visit the Osprey Watch Centre at Glentress Forest and there are many well-documented nature trails to explore. To the East, Seabirds are easily visible on St Abbs Head- especially in the springtime. The Scottish Seabird Life Centre offers days out year-round.
